Where are you in the process?
Nearly every county runs the same three gates in the same order. Work out which one you are standing at, then open your state’s guide below for the local specifics.
Stage 1
Zoning
Am I allowed to build this here, at this size, in this spot?
- Confirm your parcel’s zoning designation (agricultural, residential, commercial)
- Check setbacks from property lines, roads and septic
- Check height and lot-coverage limits
- Check whether an agricultural exemption applies to you
Stage 2
Permit
Do I have the documents the county will actually accept?
- Obtain state-stamped engineered blueprints
- Prepare a site plan showing the building’s position
- Submit the application with the fee to your building department
- Confirm whether a separate electrical permit is required
Stage 3
Inspections
Who has to sign off, and when do they need to come out?
- Schedule the foundation or post-hole inspection before pouring
- Schedule the structural inspection
- Schedule electrical sign-off if applicable
- Collect the final approval for your records
Requirements vary by county, not just by state. Your local building department is always the final word.
