Materials

DIY labor can save meaningfully on a basic shell if you have the skills, equipment and time — typically a rented telehandler, two or three helpers, and a timeline measured in weeks rather than days. DIY almost never makes sense for trusses over 40 feet, which need professional lifting equipment and experienced crews. Rural pricing can also fool you: if only a few qualified post-frame crews serve your area you lose pricing pressure and gain longer lead times, and crews driving 90 minutes each way build fuel, time and mobilization into the bid.

Site preparation and foundation

Site preparation is the line item most often left out of an initial quote. Basic grading and compaction for a level building pad is its own cost, and a gravel pad costs more per square foot on a small footprint because mobilization dominates.
